Study Guide for Unit 3 - Health and Safety.

This unit allows you to look at the health and safety issues that relate to teaching and performing Tai Chi Qigong Shibashi

Below you will see some of the issues that need addressing when you teach Shibashi.

  • Is your First Aid Qualification up to date?
  • Do you know the procedure to adopt in an emergency or accident?
  • Have you explained the evacuation procedure to your learners?
  • Do you know where the nearest telephone is?
  • Do you know where the First Aid box is kept?
  • Do you know how to report accidents?
  • Have you nominated a 'buddy' to assist less mobile learners in the case of an emergency?
  • Have you carried out an initial assessment by asking your learners to complete a Health Consultation form ?

An example health consultation form can be found at the bottom of the page.

What are the main H & S issues when performing Shibashi for specialist groups?

Some of the issues below relate to correct body alignment, so you will find the information helpful for the Unit 1 assignment.

    • If your learners have a health problem, have they asked their GP if it's ok for them to exercise.
    • If you are teaching children, do you have details of their next of kin?
    • Remind learners not to lean when performing Shibashi- you don't want them falling over!
    • Initial or diagnostic assessment - Check health problems before performing Shibashi.
    • Does anyone have problems with their blood pressure? If so advise them not to go too low with 'Scooping from the sea' & 'Spinning wheels'.
    • The knee/toe alignment is very important. Injuries to the knees can be avoided by correct knee/toe alignment.
    • Keeping the head above the heart is very important for learners who have gone through cardiac rehab but have their GP's approval to attend classes.
    • Holding ones' breath should be avoided at all times - especially for people who have gone through a cardiac rehab programme, as it can increase their blood pressure.

You will need to remember all these points for your final observation as you will be asked to name the main issues!

Please remember that the initial or diagnostic assessment is very important for health and safety.

The Health & Safety Handout that can found at the bottom of the page, provides you with information regarding the actual delivery of Tai Chi Qigong Shibashi. There is also a risk assessment form that can also be downloaded, which will remind you of the risks or H & S concerns.
